About the Charity

The Amherst Heritage Centre Charity

Welcome Sign at the Amherst Heritage CentreThe Amherst Heritage Centre (AHC) is a separate charity (1107693) based at Fort Amherst, Chatham which has been set up with the express purpose of introducing young people to heritage.

The members of the AHC have been specially selected to  represent Youth Workers, Teachers, Local Authority Youth Managers and young people to ensure the AHC remains focused on providing services for young people.

The Amherst Heritage Centre will provide safe educational facilities for school children to use as part of their tour of Fort Amherst.

The Centre is being created in an area of the Fort once used for maintenance and restoration.  Two of the existing buildings have been refurbished by the AHC.  The first building is an office and resource centre for use by Heritage Members.  The second building is a canteen and dining room which we have called "Amherst's of Chatham Coffee House" reflecting the excellent coffee and homemade food available for visitors.

The remaining buildings left over from the Maintenance & Restoration days, will be demolished and replaced with new facilities for schools.

The Amherst Heritage Centre will spearhead improvements to Fort Amherst such as interpretation signage, guides, paths, fences, booklets and the creation of a Nature Trail in the unrestored parts of the Fort.  The amount of work involved is massive but everyone is enthusiastic, and our Volunteer numbers are increasing every week.

The Amherst Heritage Centre would have never have been possible without the generous donations we have received from a collection of organisations and trusts.
